How can we meaningfully measure geometry in spaces of functions?
The Institute for Advanced Studies is honored to host Professor Shmuel Weinberger, Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, as part of the Distinguished Lectures in Pure Mathematics series.
As part of the School of Mathematical Sciences’ Colloquium, Professor Weinberger will deliver a lecture titled "The Geometry of Nonlinear Function Spaces", in which he will explore one of the central questions in modern algebraic topology: how to understand the geometry of function spaces beyond their algebraic topology. He will discuss efforts to define notions such as volume and diameter on these spaces, drawing on ideas from Gromov and recent joint work with Block and Manin.
Monday, 10 November 2025, 12:00
Where: Room 006, Schreiber Building
Light refreshments will be served before the colloquium.
The colloquium will be conducted in English and is open to the public.
